Day 8: Evangelism
Good to Know:
Being a christian is not just about me and God. Jesus came to earth to redeem all people. In today’s reading, watch Jesus reach out to someone who feels alone. What does this person (and His disciples) need to hear? Listen in on this lunchtime break with Jesus.
John 4:1-42 NLT
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John (though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did). So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”
“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.
“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied.
Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”
“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”
Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
Then Jesus told her, “I AM the Messiah!”
Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?” The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” So the people came streaming from the village to see him.
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”
But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”
“Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.
Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true. I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”
Many Samaritans Believe
Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”
Good to Do:
Who can I reach out to with Christ’s love?

I am fortunate, as I carry mail for a living, and get opportunities on the street to witness about Jesus. My route is in the hood, and I pray everyday for protection and guidance. I got to pray with a man with dementia yesterday, who is in the beginning stages. I asked what he believed about Jesus, and then we prayed for his healing. I can’t wait to see what God will do. We don’t have to go all over the world and be “famous”. Our ministry is right outside our front door. Do you know if your neighbor is… Read more »
absolutely, you are right. i agree with you. obtusely we don’t have to go out, there are lots of opportunities in our surroundings. we should understand this.
I’m not good at reaching out to others to tell them about Jesus either. But sometimes the best way to “tell” someone about Him is to live our lives in such a manner that they “see” Jesus in us and through us; to do the things He would do and wants us to do. Be kind to everyone and pray for all.
That is so true how you live your life in a Christ like manner that is how others can see Jesus in you.
Yes I agree, I really try to be that example where I treat everyone I am in contact with love and respect. The kindness of Jesus and I pray for when the opportunity come to share about Jesus the words will come out.
Unfortunately I am sometimes weak in the area of sharing Jesus with others. I find myself rushing around and basically not even noticing others when every day people are dieing and going to hell because no one took the time to share Jesus with them. God forgive me and help me to slow down and take more time for others, especially in the area of telling the lost about Jesus more.
I will pray for you, and I know what you mean. My HalfBrother died and i missed the opportunity to speak to him about Christ. And I feel bad about that right now, when I should have took the chance to talk to him about Christ.
Ms Ritter, in my walk I noticed that we can’t perch or witnessed to everyone we see but we can speak to the ones we are equipped to. Be encouraged some people we are not call to witnessed to and some are. Let God lead you the one you can and don’t feel bad about the ones you don’t because God has someone else for them. Be Blessed.
I don’t remember the name of the pastor who once said, “ we might not be the one to lead that person to the Lord, but we may be the person who plants the seed, or the one one who waters it or helps that seed to grow.” What I take from that is that we all have a part as a witness to our neighbors, by our love, by our prayers, by a small, genuine act of kindness.
How can I reach out to people, or talk to people about the word of God and how He (Jesus) saved me and doing Miracles in my life, when it’s hard for me to get out alot. Please help me to pray and ask The Lord to show me and to show me his will for my life. He (God) Kept me on earth for a reason.
Daniel you are reaching out now. You can do it from the very place you rest. Think of the number of people who came to Jesus rather than he searching for them. I will pray for wisdom for you to know God’s plan
Thank you so much, because there are times where I need help to fight of the thoughts of me being a failure to Christ for not going out and reach out to people and bring them to Christ.
Daniel you can give people a phone call and see how they day going and pray with them over the phone,if you have any social media you can spread the word on there.
I can do that, I give verses on Twitter, so I can definitely do the phone calls.
That’s great God is please with you just doingthat,no tell how many you touch with sharing your verse in Twitter.I will pray that God use you in many ways to reach people.
Are you on Facebook? There are tons of groups you could join where you could contact people and point them toward Jesus. Here’s one. You’ll find lots of people who are seeking God, seeking someone who cares, seeking honesty, and you can give them all that. I’ve always loved this story! It’s encouraging to know that God loves us (me) even though I don’t deserve it!
How loving and gracious Jesus was to this women.
Brought me to tears
It’s time for all to believe
I don’t talk first. I mean I talkto people all the time. I hope they see Jesus in me. I will give my testimony if asked but I never start out with that. I just start out as Jesus did. Friendly, kind, and caring. Then when I have had time to gain trust and hopefully they see the Jesus in me we can talk about salvation and what Jesus has done for us. If I can’t develop a rapor no one will listen.
It is important to show love and compassion regardless of the person’s background or how that person looks. Our society focuses so much on outer appearance but what about looking deeper than that. Everyone has a life journey and it isn’t easy at all. Show Jesus compassion by just being a good listener or feeding someone who is hungry.
Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” Sometimes it’s hard to believe and have faith when sometimes we can’t see or hear him. I was in a very toxic marriage and prayed for years about it. It wasn’t until I was away from it that my whole world seemed to open up and I could see it through his eyes not my own!! I divorced him and now married to a wonderful understanding man! Praise Jesus! I… Read more »
I need to work even harder to minister to others. I am weak in this area. Dear God, help me spread your word to others so they may drink the living water. Amen!
I am not good with sharing Christ to everyone. I want to be better and make a point, but I think showing in our every day actions speaks louder than just sharing the speech about what God has done for us. This is the part where I really want to strengthen myself…. I want to he able to share more about what God has done and is doing in my life.
“My nourishment comes from doing the will of God”….His Will feeds and sustains me….if I let it be the director in my life.
Sharing the Gospel about Jesus can be as simple as sharing how He changed your life. Allowing God to work thru you is as easy as serving others.
Good reading.
In these times we need to go and plant many seeds and bring people to the Lord our God.
No matter what we have done or where we have been, Jesus wants to have a divine meeting with us!
Jesus spoke to a woman who he was not supposed to associate with. This is a great reminder that I can reach out, show kindness and love to everyone no matter what religion, race, or how they identify themselves. Salvation is a gift for all people not just me.
We must let God lead us into witnessing because If you go on your own ,thing can go wrong real quick. Listen, pray and watch for the little opportunity to open for someone to Christ.
He calls us to be true worshipers in spirit and truth!
I liked How the story showed you the kind and compassion that Jesus always has I need to remember I need to always have compassion for everybody. Not just friends and fellow Christians. It was a good reminder today.
I need prayer for reaching out and spreading the gospel. I want to lead others to Christ but have this idea that I need to learn more about the Bible before doing so. I read scripture but I don’t always remember it.
I think that the times I don’t share Christ it is because I have not been praying for and about opportunities to share. At those times I am more focused on myself than on God’s will for me and all of us who believe. We are to make disciples, so all will hear the good news, and those who are chosen believe.
